The University's Contribution

Economic Impact

The University of Winnipeg is the largest institutional concentration of population in downtown Winnipeg. Over ten thousand students, faculty, and staff converge daily into the downtown, bringing vitality, diversity, and creativity to the area. These students, faculty, and staff contribute upwards of $20 million annually in consumer spending to Winnipeg’s core area.

Population Hub

The University of Winnipeg is a provincially and privately funded post-secondary institution with undergraduate and select graduate programs, as well as a Collegiate that offers high-school level courses and a Division of Continuing Education.

The University offers over 800 courses in more than 40 areas of study including Arts, Science, Education, and Theology, and in interdisciplinary areas such as Aboriginal Governance and Urban and Environmental Studies. It welcomes disadvantaged students, seniors, Aboriginal people, newly arrived immigrants, and an ever-increasing flow of international students. Added to the University’s popularity with its students, these educational features predict a future enrolment of 12,000 to 14,000 students within the next ten years.

Community and Business Partner

Partnering with local businesses, government, charitable organizations, and community development agencies is a key priority of The University of Winnipeg. Our University is contributing to Winnipeg’s urban renaissance through continued excellence in traditional programming, and through dynamic and innovative initiatives. Through our role as a partner in the downtown community, we are providing an educated workforce for the new knowledge-economy.

Athletic Excellence

The Duckworth Centre, a facility of the University’s Recreation and Athletic Department, attracts sporting events of a national and international caliber, positioning it as a top tier player in the tourism infrastructure of Winnipeg and Manitoba as well as a university of choice for young athletes. In recent years, more than 175,000 people have attended events at The Duckworth Centre annually.

The Wesmen have won 19 National Championships (#1 in Canada) and in recent years, over 50% of all Wesmen athletes attained the status of Academic All Canadian (#1 in Canada).

In recent MacLean's Magazine and Globe & Mail rankings of universities, The University of Winnipeg consistently posts high, and is ranked by MacLean's among the top ten universities in Canada in terms of the student’s evaluation of quality undergraduate education.
