A New Campus Comes Alive – The Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex

Richardsoncollege

Long confined to its original footprint on Portage Avenue between Balmoral and Spence Streets, The University of Winnipeg is expanding west with an ambitious plan to convert a city block between Langside and Furby Streets into a new extension of campus - a campus that includes a new home for UWinnipeg's renowned Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Studies departments featuring state-of-the-art research space, teaching laboratories, classrooms, science offices and public exhibition space.

Thanks to significant support from the Government of Manitoba ($25 M), construction of the new complex is now underway conforming to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification standard for sustainable buildings. This includes making use of recycled material from the site of the old Winnipeg Roller Rink, constructing a central atrium with vegetation, installing a green roof and using renewable energy. The building will not only provide much needed, modern facilities for our students, but will serve as a living laboratory for research. It will be accompanied with a new Urban Green Space - an environmental garden planted with native prairie vegetation, a source of learning and study by students, researchers and the community.
