The Collegiate...a Unique Place for Learning and Growing
The Collegiate’s Mission
At its creation within Wesley College, The Collegiate was the only secondary school in Manitoba. Through its years as United College to its present status as an independent school and a division of The University of Winnipeg, The Collegiate has maintained its unique character and has hosted generations of innovative and passionate minds.
The Collegiate tradition is one of academic excellence and accessibility in an environment of critical thinking and community spirit. Continuing in its worthy traditions, The Collegiate at The University of Winnipeg is committed to offering high school programs for Senior 1 to Senior 4 students (Grades 9 to 12) that provide a transition to post-secondary education.
The Collegiate philosophy emphasizes the need for students to become mature individuals within an atmosphere of self-generated discipline, where students can discover freedom and its complement, responsibility.
To foster its mission, The Collegiate strives to provide and environment of academic freedom, mutual trust, support, and on-going professional development for Faculty.
In a world of continuing change, The Collegiate Faculty members strive to engage students in a rigorous curriculum that will prepare them for and encourage them to pursue a lifelong love of learning.
The Collegiate seeks to enable its students to reflect upon moral and ethical issues and to develop their concern for the welfare of others. The Faculty is committed to providing guidance and structure which results in the students’ intellectual, social, and personal development: in short, the education of the total person.
The Collegiate views accessibility as an important goal, compatible with its commitment to academic excellence, and strives to draw forth the best from Collegiate students.
The University of Winnipeg Collegiate is about students. Here, different is good. Respecting student diversity and freedom – along with responsibility – and encouraging a passion for learning are the hallmark of The Collegiate.
Located in historic Wesley Hall, The University of Winnipeg Collegiate nurtures more than 600 students in Grades 9 through 12.
The history of this unique high school begins in 1871, when Manitoba College was formed to provide high school and university studies. Following the union of Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the Collegiate provided secondary education within United College, and continues today as a division of The University of Winnipeg.
The Collegiate attracts students from all parts of Manitoba from Morden to Shamattawa and from all parts of Canada from the Maritimes to British Columbia and the Yukon. It also welcomes international students from over twenty-five countries worldwide.
Top calibre students continue to choose The Collegiate for its rigorous curriculum and its commitment to supporting students' love of learning. Historically, more than 85% of graduates continue their education in post-secondary institutions, with half of all graduates receiving scholarships to attend the post-secondary institution of their choice.
The quality of education at The Collegiate is shaped by our dedicated faculty. The focus of learning is not simply on academics, but encouraging independent thinking and hands-on learning. Each member of the faculty has found his or her unique way to bring subject matter to life.
There are 30 faculty members teaching in The Collegiate. Many have been recognized for teaching excellence, are well known and respected in their area of expertise. Half of the faculty has earned masters and/or doctorate degrees.
