Housing and Child Care
Continued growth and the transformation of The University of Winnipeg's campus create additional housing demands for both international and out-of-town students. Ideally situated in an urban setting with access to shops and services, the University is developing a “village” concept featuring housing for students to live within close proximity of campus.
Student residences already exist in a variety of dormitory-style and housing units in the Spence and West Broadway neighborhoods. The University plans to construct a new mixed-housing building on Langside Street adjacent to the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex with units available to both UWinnipeg students as well as students enrolled in other educational institutions. This residence will be built in a ‘flexible’ way to accommodate a mix of family units, especially for our students who are raising children while going to university – an option ideally suited to students from remote and Northern communities who could not otherwise attend university.
Furthermore, the site will also be a new home for the Child Care Centre – operated by The University of Winnipeg Students' Association (UWSA) – with plans to double the number of infant and toddler spaces available to students, faculty, staff and community members. Combined with provincial government support, the new residence and the child care facility offer an opportunity for prospective donors to make a real impact on the quality of student life at The University of Winnipeg.
