Leader in Aboriginal Education
Canada's future economic and cultural success is intrinsically linked with the academic success of our Aboriginal peoples. They are the fastest growing population in Manitoba and are quickly emerging as a powerful economic and political force – particularly the more than 70,000 urban Aboriginal residents in the City of Winnipeg. However, the human potential and ‘talent capital’ of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples will not be truly realized without a proper focus and investment in their education.
The University of Winnipeg already has a strong track record of attracting Aboriginal students to its campus and is becoming recognized as a leader in Aboriginal education in Canada. With more than 800 self-identified Aboriginal students on campus, there is an active Aboriginal Students’ Council, a popular Aboriginal Student Services Centre (ASSC) and other programs and services tailored to make the University environment more welcoming to Aboriginal students and their families.
UWinnipeg is also playing a national leadership role by hosting the Aboriginal University Education Roundtable – a forum of universities, First Nations and Métis educational institutions and governments that have come together to accelerate efforts to improve the success of Aboriginal students in Canadian universities. With your support, we can open our doors even wider to more Aboriginal and inner-city students in a variety of ways.
